Particularly with the pandemic, it’s been more difficult for people to get to their regular appointments. Technology has had to adapt quickly to these changes. Virtual dentistry allows people to get an opinion from their Raleigh, NC dentist in the comfort of their own home. Tryon Family Dentistry offers virtual dentistry to help all of our patients get the care they need.
What is Virtual Dentistry?
Virtual dentistry is also called teledentistry. You can use your phone, tablet, laptop, or desktop computer for your virtual appointment. The setup is similar to that of using FaceTime or Skype to make a video call. We use a software called doxy.me that’s completely HIPAA-complaint, so you can talk to your dentist with confidence.
About Doxy.me
Doxy.me is free-to-use software that doesn’t require you to make an account to utilize it. It’s completely HIPAA-compliant and none of your personal data is saved. The connection is also encrypted while you’re on the call so that no one can access the conversation to get precious information.
Who is Teledentistry For?
You may think that virtual dentistry is only really used for people that aren’t going in public due to COVID-19. However, virtual dentistry can benefit almost anyone. If you’re immunocompromised or at home with a cold or other illness, virtual dentistry can help you avoid germs and getting other people sick.
Teledentistry is also a convenient option for those who are super busy. It can be hard to get into the office for an extra appointment just to discuss future treatment. A virtual consult is ideal for discussing things like a smile makeover or other cosmetic treatment with your dentist. They can talk to you about your goals and concerns, as well as your medical history, and help you get an idea of what the best treatment options are going forward.
Travel can also be a struggle, particularly if you rely on public transportation or someone to give you a ride. Virtual dentistry helps with this. If you’ve seen a dentist and gotten a recommendation for a treatment, we can also give you a second opinion over virtual dentistry. We’ll help you determine if this is the right option for you.
The Virtual Dentistry Process
To schedule a virtual appointment, you can call or select a virtual consult from the dropdown box for online scheduling. We’ll contact you about a time and get your appointment scheduled. A link will be emailed to you and you’ll simply click on that at your appointment time to enter a virtual waiting room. You’ll wait there until the dentist enters the conversation.
While doxy.me is free to use, the dentist will charge a fee for their services. They can submit the claim to your dental insurance if applicable to see if it’s covered for you. Similar to a video call, you’ll discuss your issues with the dentist. They’ll determine a further course of action, including if you’ll need to come into the office for a further examination.
