How to Recover Fast After Dental Implant Surgery

What’s the recovery process like after getting dental implants in Wilson? The recovery process will take time, and it’s not the same for everyone. One thing is certain – it definitely doesn’t happen overnight. Studies show that dental implant surgery has a high success rate of 98%. However, smooth surgery doesn’t guarantee that you’ll get good results in the long run.

Yes, dental implant surgery is relatively simple and quick, but what you do after plays a vital role in its overall success. For a speedy recovery, you must have the patience to wait until the implants are well integrated within your jawbone tissues and, more importantly, be committed to following post-operative instructions.

How to Heal Fast After Dental Implant Surgery

#1 Take It Easy

We know you’re excited to go back to the daily grind, but the best thing you can do to recover quickly after surgery is to rest up and allow your body to heal itself. Rushing to exercise can lead to pain, swelling, and bleeding. Remember that the wounds in your mouth are still fresh, and they are prone to injury and irritation.

You should avoid any situation that could result in trauma to your mouth while you recover. If you don’t take it easy, you’ll only delay the healing. Also, even if everything is starting to go back to normal, we still suggest you avoid strenuous activities and other sports that could potentially hit your face, as these could lead to complications.

#2 Make Diet Modifications

You can’t go back to your usual diet right after the surgery. During the first two days post-op, you should avoid hot and spicy foods as they can cause irritation and bleeding. In addition, your diet should only consist of soft foods.

Choose foods that require minimal chewing and less jaw movement to avoid irritation. When selecting soft foods, make sure they are nutritious and healthy. An excellent way to get enough nutrients is to make your protein shakes and smoothies. But don’t use a straw when drinking your smoothies. The suctioning movement may irritate the site.

#3 Drink Up

Proper hydration is crucial after getting surgery. You want to flush out the toxins from your body that are slowing down the healing process.  When you drink enough fluids, your body will feel energized. It’s essential to avoid alcohol and caffeine during your recovery since these drinks can lead to dehydration.

Alcoholic beverages will also delay the healing process. You should steer clear of them for at least two weeks after the surgery. Again, don’t use a straw when you drink. The sucking motion from sipping your drink through a straw can cause bleeding.

#4 Ice Packs

Swelling is expected after the surgery. Unfortunately, some people experience more swelling compared to others. To minimize swelling, you may place an ice pack on the affected side of your face where you had the implants placed.

The ice packs effectively decrease the swelling while simultaneously providing pain relief. If you don’t want the ice directly on your skin, you can wrap it in a towel. Only apply the ice pack for a maximum of 20 minutes at a time.

#5 Rinse Your Mouth with Saline Solution

Did you know that saline rinses can effectively speed up the healing process after oral surgery? Research suggests that saltwater helps minimize oral bacteria without irritating the site. Besides helping with healing, the saline solution also provides a soothing effect.

You can make your saline rinse by mixing a teaspoon of salt with eight ounces of warm water. Wait until the salt is fully dissolved before swishing the solution in your mouth for approximately 30 seconds. After 30 seconds, you may spit it out. Typically, you are advised to rinse your mouth with saline water a maximum of four times a day.

#6 Stop Smoking

Smoking is never a good idea, but it’s even worse if you’ve just had dental implant surgery. Studies reveal that if you continue to smoke post-op, there’s a big chance you won’t be able to recover successfully. The nicotine in your cigarette will impede oxygen flow to the site. As a result, healing will be delayed. Further research suggests that tobacco and nicotine can interfere with osseointegration or the ability of the implants to fuse with your jawbone.

#7 Establish an Oral Care Routine

Even though dental implants are artificial teeth, you still need to practice good oral hygiene. The way you clean your mouth can change in various phases of the recovery process. Nevertheless, you still need to do it. Brushing and flossing your teeth daily will reduce your risk of developing an infection around the site.

“Amazing office. The dentists here do great work. Replaced four of my front teeth with veneers and worked with me (for free) when the treatment plan didn’t go exactly as expected due to my chronic bruxism. They always explain what they’re doing, and why. I thoroughly trust this team with my dental care.”
